High and Low.
That phrase contains so many interesting allusions to a variety of concepts and conversations that shape the way we see and understand the world today.
High culture and low culture: the realms of fine art positioned next to the worlds of mass and pop culture and the demographics that occupy each space.
High angles and low angles: questions of aesthetics and the intentional construction of art and media.
High tech and low tech: the intersection of the newest technology and communication tools with our steadfast analog companions, like the book and pen and paper.
The phrase also has geographic implications to it. One might think of high and low elevations, or perhaps high and low latitudes.
I thought of all these references, as I was searching for the perfect title for this blog, and I realized how well this phrase encompasses my interests. I am currently working on a Master’s in Cultural and Media Studies, researching and constantly thinking about culture, media, technology, and aesthetics. I see my own nomadic life manifested in this title; I have moved from Southern to Northern hemispheres, and I continue to travel extensively around the globe, searching “high and low” for new experiences and perspectives.
But to be honest, the phrase is not my own. I borrowed it from one of my favorite film directors, Akira Kurosawa, who made a film of the same name.
I recently gave a presentation on this film, right about the same time as I was searching for a title. The film addresses numerous questions about the tensions between pre-modernity and modernity, high and mass culture, and Western and Eastern culture—many of the same topics I hope to engage in this space. Seeing as the film is also my favorite of Kurosawa’s, it felt like an apt tribute.
So here it is, High and Low, my newest adventure. Join me on this unpredictable ride through conversations ranging from critical discussions of books, films, TV shows, and technology to photos and accounts from my travels, during which I will examine media and technology through unique cultural lenses. I look forward to sharing my various journeys, both conceptual and tangible, with you!
